What is AI search optimisation?

AI search optimisation is the practice of preparing a business's online presence so that AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Grok, Perplexity and Copilot can find it, understand it and recommend it when people ask for suggestions. It is also known as generative engine optimisation (GEO) or answer engine optimisation (AEO).

When someone asks an AI assistant "who is the best plumber near me" or "which accountant should I use", the assistant gives a short, confident answer naming a handful of businesses. AI search optimisation is the work of making sure yours is one of them.

Why does AI search optimisation matter?

The way people find businesses is changing. A growing share of buying decisions now starts as a conversation with an AI assistant instead of a scroll through search results. That changes the maths of visibility completely. A search results page has ten blue links and three ads; an AI answer usually names two or three businesses and stops. There is no page two.

If an AI model cannot find your business, cannot understand what it does, or cannot verify that it is credible, it will recommend someone else and the customer will never know you existed. That is the risk AI search optimisation removes.

How do AI assistants decide which businesses to recommend?

AI assistants build their answers from what they can find, read and verify:

Thin, vague or inconsistent information is the most common reason a real, capable business is invisible in AI answers.

AI search optimisation vs SEO: what is the difference?

SEO optimises for ranked lists of links in search engines like Google. AI search optimisation targets the single conversational answer an AI assistant gives. The signals overlap but are weighted very differently. Classic SEO leans on keywords, links and rankings factors. AI answers lean on machine-readable structure, direct answers to real questions, and agreement across sources.

Good SEO helps AI visibility but does not guarantee it. A site can rank well on Google and still be effectively unreadable to a language model deciding who to recommend. The two disciplines are complementary, and AI search optimisation is designed to run alongside existing marketing rather than replace it.

What does the work actually involve?

A structured AI search optimisation campaign typically covers six areas:

This is how AI Search King structures its own three month campaigns, delivered across eleven stages with monthly check-ins.

How long does it take to work?

Results build progressively rather than switching on overnight, because each AI platform refreshes its knowledge of the web on its own schedule. Changes typically start showing in the weeks after implementation, with meaningful movement usually visible within one structured campaign of around three months. In one published AI Search King case study, a Florida tax advisory firm's overall AI search visibility score rose from 47 to 86 out of 100 in a single campaign.

Can results be guaranteed?

No, and you should be wary of anyone who says otherwise. AI platforms are controlled by the companies that build them, and nobody outside those companies can promise what an AI assistant will say about a specific business. What the work can do is systematically remove the reasons a business is invisible to AI and build the signals that make it easy to recommend. That is why honest providers guarantee the quality and continuation of the work rather than a specific AI output.
