Schema markup, explained for business owners
The most important code on your website is code your visitors will never see. Here is what schema markup does, which types you need, and how to check yours in two minutes.
What schema markup actually is
Schema markup is a block of code on your web page that states facts about your business in a standard vocabulary machines read directly. Humans never see it. Crawlers and AI systems read it before anything else, because it is the one part of your page that requires no interpretation.
Why it matters more in the AI era
Search engines used schema to decorate listings with stars and prices. AI assistants use it for something bigger: understanding what your business is. A model deciding who to recommend needs your services, area, pricing and credentials as facts, not as marketing prose it has to decode. Schema is how you hand those facts over cleanly.
The schema types most small businesses need
- LocalBusiness (or a specific subtype): your name, address, phone, opening hours, area served and price range. The foundation.
- Service or Product: each thing you sell, described separately with its own name and description.
- FAQPage: your question-and-answer content in machine form, matching the visible text word for word.
- Review and AggregateRating: genuine ratings, marked up so machines can verify the numbers.
- Organization: the legal entity behind the trading name, which helps machines connect your business across the web.
The rules that keep you safe
Schema must describe what is actually on the page. Marking up reviews that do not exist or services you do not offer is the fastest way to lose machine trust, and platforms actively check. The visible page and the structured data must always agree.
How to check what you currently have
Paste any page of your site into a schema validator (search "schema markup validator").
