AI search optimisation vs SEO
One optimises for a list of links a human scrolls. The other optimises for the single answer a machine writes. Here is exactly where they overlap and where they part ways.
The short answer
SEO gets you ranked. AI search optimisation gets you recommended. One optimises for a list of links a human scrolls; the other for a single composed answer a machine writes. They overlap, they compound, and they are not interchangeable.

Where they overlap
Plenty of good work serves both: fast, crawlable pages, real content depth, accurate business information, genuine reviews. A technically healthy site is the shared foundation, which is why an AI search campaign often improves classic SEO scores as a side effect, as it did in the published case study, where technical SEO rose from 52 to 88 and organic search from 42 to 85 alongside the AI visibility gains.
Where they part ways
The decisive differences are in what gets weighted. AI answers lean heavily on machine-readable structured data, content that answers literal questions, and agreement about your business across independent sources. Classic SEO can succeed with none of those in place, which is exactly why strong-ranking businesses are routinely absent from AI answers. The disciplines also fail differently: losing an SEO position drops you to result four; being absent from an AI answer means the customer never sees your name at all.
Common questions
Is AI search optimisation the same as SEO?
No. SEO optimises for ranked lists of links in search engines like Google. AI search optimisation, also called GEO or AEO, targets the single conversational answer an AI assistant such as ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini gives when someone asks for a recommendation. The signals overlap but are weighted very differently.
Does good SEO mean good AI visibility?
Not automatically. A site can rank well on Google and still be effectively unreadable to a language model, usually because it lacks structured data, answers no literal questions, or is inconsistent with third-party sources. Good SEO helps AI visibility, but it does not deliver it by itself.
Should a business do SEO or AI search optimisation?
Both, ideally, because they compound. SEO defends visibility in classic search, which still carries most traffic today. AI search optimisation builds visibility in the channel that is growing, where answers name only a handful of businesses. The businesses moving early on AI search face far less competition for those few slots.
Can my SEO agency do AI search optimisation?
Ask them what they would change specifically for AI assistants. Dedicated AI search work involves structured data depth, question-led content built from real AI queries, cross-source consistency work and AI crawler access, delivered and measured against what AI platforms actually say. Most SEO agencies do not yet offer this as a discipline.
